Launched by Kering in 2015, in collaboration with the Festival de Cannes, Women In Motion seeks to highlight women in cinema, both in front of and behind the camera. Since the fight for equality in creation extends beyond cinema, the program has expanded to photography, music, choreography, art, and design. A longstanding commitment
Launched by Kering in 2015, in collaboration with the Festival de Cannes, Women In Motion seeks to highlight women in cinema, both in front of and behind the camera. Since the fight for equality in creation extends beyond cinema, the program has expanded to photography, music, choreography, art, and design.
Through its Awards, the program recognizes inspirational figures and talented young women, while its Talks provide an opportunity for leading personalities to share their views on the representation of women in their profession.
Women In Motion and Tokyo International Film Festival
This 36th edition is the third time Women In Motion joins forces with the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). 2019 saw the program spotlight actor Shinobu Terajima, movie director and photographer Mika Ninagawa, and artist Sputniko! at its inaugural Talk. A second followed in 2022, featuring filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda and Japanese actor Mayu Matsuoka.
Exploring three distinct views on cinema
This year, Women In Motion features three leading figures in South Korean and Japanese cinema, namely South Korean actor[TE(1] Bae Donna, Japanese actor Asami Mizukawa and Japanese producer Kayo Washio. These three talented icons share their distinct views on the cinematic role of women in South Korea, Japan, as well as Hollywood. Together, they also discuss the industry's future and challenges, at TOHO Cinemas.

Bae Doona
Bae Doona made her screen debut in The Ring Virus (1999) and made a name for herself in Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000). She is also well known for her appearances in films directed by Japanese directors such as Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Air Doll and Broker. In August 2023, Next Sohee was released in Japan.
Asami Mizukawa
Mizukawa made her screen debut in Shanghai Mermaid Legend Murder Case (1997) and won numerous awards for Runway (2020) and A Beloved Wife (2019). Her directorial debut film, About a Man, was released in 2022. She continues to appear in prominent films such as The Silent Service, Six Singing Women, and Beyond the Fog.
Kayo Washio
Worked in the Movie Department at WOWOW before opening the LA office in 2011, where she negotiated contracts with major studios and handled international co-productions, including Martin Scorsese’s The New York Review of Books. Recently co-produced Tokyo Vice, which completed filming of Season 2 this year, with HBO Max (now Max).

Following a first Women In Motion Talk held at TIFF in 2019, featuring actress Shinobu Terajima, movie director Mika Ninagawa, and artist Sputniko!, the program renews its partnership with the festival. That year, Women In Motion featured filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, who has won numerous domestic and international awards, including the Palme d’Or in Cannes in 2018, and actress Mayu Matsuoka, who appeared in Kore-eda's Shoplifters. Film journalist, Atsuko Tatsuta, was the Talk facilitator.
These two talented icons discuss the role of women in the Japanese film industry and its challenges from their different perspectives as a director and an actress.
Hirokazu Kore-eda
Hirokazu Kore-eda is a filmmaker born in Tokyo in 1962 who graduated from Waseda University's Faculty of Letters in 1987. After joining TV Man Union where he directed several prize-winning documentary programs, Kore-eda launched his own production company BUN-BUKU, in 2014. His major directing credits include the film Nobody Knows 2004/ Festival de Cannes, Best Actor Award), Air Doll (2009/ Festival de Cannes, Un Certain Regard), the TV series Going Home (2012), Like Father, Like Son (2013/ Festival de Cannes, Jury Prize), Our Little Sister (2015/ Festival de Cannes Official Selection), Shoplifters (Palme d'Or at the 2018 Festival de Cannes, nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards), and La Verité (a French-Japanese co-production, official selection in competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 2019). His latest Korean film Broker won the Best Actor Award and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the 75th Festival de Cannes.
Mayu Matsuoka
Mayu Matsuoka is an actress born in Tokyo in 1995. She started her career as a child actor and gained attention in The Kirishima Thing and Lesson of the Evil (both in 2012), as well as in the NHK TV series Amachan (2013). Matsuoka also appeared in the Chihayafuru trilogy (2016, 2018) and the NHK TV Series Sanadamaru (2016). She played her first leading role in a film in Tremble All You Want (2017) and appeared in Shoplifters (2018) directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, which won the Palme d'Or at the 71st Festival de Cannes. At the 42nd Academy Awards, she won the Outstanding Leading Actress Award for Tremble All You Want and the Outstanding Supporting Actress Award for Shoplifters. Recent films include Bees And Distant Thunder (2019), Hitoyo (2019), Gekijo (2020), Damashienokiba (2021), and Helldogs: In the house of bamboo (2022). She also appears in the Netflix series The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House scheduled for distribution in 2023, directed by Kore-eda.
