As part of its third partnership with the Tokyo International Film Festival, Kering is pleased to host an exclusive Women In Motion Talk with South Korean actor Bae Doona, Japanese actor Asami Mizukawa, and Japanese producer Kayo Washio. With a special opening speech from the Palme d'Or-winning filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, the discussion will be held at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya, on October 27, 2023.
Bae Doona, an internationally renowned South Korean actor who has also worked in Hollywood and with Japanese directors including Kore-eda in Broker and Air Doll, will make a long-awaited appearance at a film event in Japan.
Asami Mizukawa is one of the most sought-after Japanese actors who received critical acclaim for her lead performances in A Beloved Wife and Runway and won the Best Actress award at Mainichi Film Awards and Kinema Junpo Award for Best Film of the Year. In 2022, she made a directorial debut with an anthology MIRRORLIAR FILMS.
Kayo Washio is a chief producer of international co-production for Japan's leading pay TV station WOWOW. Her recent projects include Tell It Like a Woman which received an Oscar nomination for Best Song and the acclaimed HBO Max series, Tokyo Vice, to which she serves as the Executive Producer. Kayo was featured in Variety’s International Women’s Impact Report 2021 and was named one of the 20 Most Powerful Women in Global Entertainment by The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 and 2022.
These three icons will discuss women’s representation in the film industries of South Korea, Japan, and the U.S., and the challenges of promoting equality, from their unique perspectives.
In 2015, Kering launched Women In Motion at the Festival de Cannes with the ambition of highlighting women in cinema, both in front of and behind the camera. The program has since expanded in a major way to photography, but also to art, design, choreography, and music, across multiple partnerships and initiatives over the world (in Europe, in the U.S., in Asia).
Since 2018, Kering organized several Women In Motion Talks in Japan, and it has been an official partner of KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival since 2020. This will be the third time that a Women In Motion Talk is held at TIFF, following the 2019 edition, featuring Shinobu Terajima, Mika Ninagawa, and Sputniko!, and the 2022 edition featuring Hirokazu Kore-eda and Mayu Matsuoka.

About Bae Doona (Actor)
Born in Seoul in 1979, South Korea, Bae Doona graduated from Hanyang University with a degree in theater and film. Influenced by her mother and a stage actor, Kim Hwa-young, she became interested in acting at an early age. After working as a model, she made her film debut in 1999, playing the role of Park Eun-suh, the "Sadako" in The Ring Virus, a Korean remake of the Japanese film Ring. Her big break came in 2000 with Bong Joon-ho’s directorial debut film, Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), and she steadily built her filmography in South Korea with Take Care of My Cat (2001), for which she won the Best Actress Award at the Baeksang Arts Award, Park Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), and Bong Joon-ho’s The Host (2006), while expanding her career to Hollywood with Cloud Atlas (2012) and Jupiter's Ascending (2015). She has also worked with Japanese directors such as Nobuhiro Yamashita in Linda Linda Linda (2005) and Hirokazu Kore-eda in Air Doll (2009) and Broker (2022). Next Sohee (2022), her second work with the director Jung Ju-ri after A Girl at My Door (2014), in which she received applause for her portrayal of a detective with a strong sense of justice, was released in Japan in August 2023.
About Asami Mizukawa (Actor)
Born in Osaka in 1983, Mizukawa made her screen debut at the age of fifteen with Shanghai Mermaid Legend Murder Case (1997). She received critical acclaim for her lead performances in A Beloved Wife (2019) and Runway (2020) and won the Best Actress awards at the 94th Kinema Junpo Award for Best Film of the Year and the Best Actress award at the 75th Mainichi Film Award. In 2022, she made a directorial debut with About a Man (2022), an episode in Season 4 of an anthology MIRRORLIAR FILMS. She continues to appear in prominent films with her most recent work, The Silent Service, released on September 29th, 2023. Her upcoming releases include Six Singing Women on October 27th and Beyond the Fog directed by Daichi Murase and executive produced by Naomi Kawase. Mizukawa is also set to perform in two theatrical plays: Limousine, directed by Yutaka Kuramochi from November 3rd, and Hone to Keibetsu by Keralino Sandorovich from February 23rd, 2024.
About Kayo Washio
Kayo Washio, a member of the Producers Guild of America (PGA), is a Chief Producer at Japan’s leading premium pay TV broadcaster WOWOW and is responsible for their oversees international co-productions, distributions, and acquisitions. Her recent projects incudes the star-studded female-driven anthology film, Tell It Like a Woman, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song, and the acclaimed HBO Max series, Tokyo Vice, to which she serves as the Executive Producer. Prior to spearheading the opening of WOWOW’s Los Angeles office in 2011, Kayo produced weekly programs covering cinema, negotiated licensing deals with major studios for film and TV series, and cemented its successful partnerships with organizations such as CNN and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Kayo was featured in the Variety’s International Women’s Impact Report 2021 and was named one of the 20 Most Powerful Women in Global Entertainment by The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 and 2022.
