François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of PPR, was a speaker today, Wednesday 25 March 2009, at the conference on sustainable luxury organised by the International Herald Tribune at the Imperial Hotel in New Delhi, India.
For this 8th global conference, Suzy Menkes, Chief Fashion Editor of the International Herald Tribune, invited over 450 persons from 35 countries. It is a chance for leaders and designers of the luxury sector, marketing and media professionals to come together and exchange ideas and views on the subject of sustainable luxury.
The conference's guest of honour, François-Henri Pinault gave a talk on the subject of “responsible luxury”. Mr. Pinault asserted that "Luxury and sustainable development share common values […] Today, more than ever, people want to return to genuine values such as timelessness, sincerity and exemplary standards. […] For a number of years now, sustainable development has been an underlying trend throughout the luxury industry. […] But altering a ship’s course takes time. Sustainable luxury can only be achieved in the long term through patience and perseverance, beginning with the little, sometimes almost invisible things."
He added: "PPR’s commitment in favor of social and environmental responsibility is not new. It was a step we took over a decade ago, with the introduction of an ethical charter in 1996, which was followed by a code of conduct that outlines our engagement. PPR’s involvement in this domain has continued to grow ever since, to the point where it is now an essential part of our culture.[…] I cannot imagine running a company like PPR without a commitment to corporate responsibility. [...] But I am perfectly well aware that actions speak louder than words. Nothing can be achieved without the support of management and without practical measures."
François-Henri Pinault concluded "I’m sure you appreciate that the duty of luxury is not only to act, but also to mobilize. In doing so, I believe that luxury is not just sustainable, but responsible".
At the end of his talk, François-Henri Pinault introduced the film-event Home, directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, produced by Luc Besson, and supported by PPR. This film provides a constructive look at the social and environmental issues of our world. Home will enjoy an unprecedented distribution effort: the film will be released world-wide in cinemas, on television, on DVD and on internet free of charge on the same day: the 5 June 2009, World Environment Day.
