Kering | Women In Motion celebrates women photographers, past and present

For the fourth year running, Kering | Women In Motion is pleased to renew its partnership with the Elles x Paris Photo program and, for the first time, to support four galleries in the international photography fair. 

To mark the centenary of Sabine Weiss's birth, Women In Motion is also supporting two exhibitions on the photographer in Lausanne and Berlin. 

To note the fourth international stage of the retrospective, Kering supported the Vivian Maier exhibition at Fotografiska New York.

November 7 to 10, 2024 at the Grand Palais, Kering supports Elles x Paris Photo program plus four galleries whose programming is dedicated to women photographers: Martini & Ronchetti, Higher Pictures, Nadja Vilenne, and Monitor 

Kering is delighted to continue its support, through its Women In Motion program and in conjunction with the French Ministry of Culture, of the Elles x Paris Photo path, curated this year by Raphaëlle Stopin, Director of the Centre Photographique Rouen Normandie. The initiative includes a series of conversations around the representation and recognition of women photographers, and encourages galleries present at Paris Photo to promote the work of their female artists to collectors and institutions. Since its launch, Elles x Paris Photo has contributed to a significant increase in the number of women photographers present at the fair: in 2024, women photographers represent 38% of artists displayed, compared to just 20% in 2018. This year, for the first time thanks to the support of Kering, the program is strengthened by directly assisting four galleries – Martini & Ronchetti, Higher Pictures, Nadja Vilenne, and Monitor – which are presenting monographic or group exhibitions of women photographers.

 

June 22 to January 12, 2025 at Photo Elysée, Lausanne: Sabine Weiss & Nathalie Boutté: homage

To mark the centenary of the birth of Sabine Weiss (1924 – 1921), Women In Motion Award for photography 2020, Photo Elysée presents a tribute exhibition to the photographer and invites visual artist Nathalie Boutté to engage in dialogue about Weiss’s photography. Whereas Sabine Weiss constructed her work by photographing the street or working in her studio, Nathalie Boutté does not take photographs. Rather, she meticulously cuts out strips of paper on which she prints a text. She then recomposes the images from which she drew her inspiration - in this case, photographs by Sabine Weiss - thus recreating the original work. 
 

September 6 to November 24, 2024 at f³ - freiraum für fotografie, Berlin: Sabine Weiss, A Photographer's Life

This retrospective is the first in Germany devoted to the work of Sabine Weiss. The exhibition, which the artist worked on until her death, bears witness to her passion for photography and highlights the central themes of her work, which focuses on the human condition. Through its display of original prints, archival documents and films, the exhibition portrays a photographer driven by an insatiable curiosity for others, whether in France, the United States, or on her countless journeys across Europe.

A look back at the exhibition Vivian Maier: Unseen work at Fotografiska, New York, on view from May 31 to September 29, 2024

After supporting retrospectives of Vivian Maier's work in Paris, Turin, and Seoul, Women In Motion supported the exhibition Vivian Maier: Unseen Work at New York's Fotografiska earlier this year, from Spring through Autumn. This unique exhibition in the USA explored the complete oeuvre of the American photographer, from the early 1950s to the mid-1980s, through some 200 works: vintage and modern prints, in color and black and white, as well as Super 8 films and soundtracks. The retrospective offers a complete vision of the dense, rich, and complex architecture of this archive. The exhibition welcomed some 83,000 visitors.
