UN Global Compact Leaders Summit is considered to be a pivotal event on sustainable development. CEOs from around the world meet with leaders from civil society, government and the United Nations.
Held last month in New York, chaired by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon under the tagline Architects of a Better World, the 2013 summit highlighted scalable sustainability solutions as industry initiatives that play a powerful role in shaping the Post-2015 development agenda.
During the Executive Session Business Sector Initiatives, Marie-Claire Daveu, chief sustainability officer at Kering, shared the Group’s Environmental Profit & Loss (E P&L) accounting work. The E P&L is an example of a solution that can be scaled across industries and leveraged to create systemic change.
Following Marie-Claire’s speech, the session’s facilitator Aron Cramer, president and CEO of Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), kicked off the debate with the audience by asking the question “How can individual sector initiatives – and their associated member companies – better ensure that positive steps are being taken within their entire industry?”. The goal was to identify what lessons we can learn from these efforts and how can they achieve greater scale and influence.
Other speakers in the session included H.E. Nick Hækkerup, minister for trade and European affairs, Denmark, Dr. Hamadoun Touré- secretary general, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Barry Parkin, chief sustainability officer, Mars Chocolate.
