Kering celebrates the fifth year of its partnership with Les Rencontres d'Arles by continuing and increasing its support for women photographers through numerous projects and events supported by the Women In Motion program. On this anniversary, Kering is also pleased to announce the extension and strengthening of its partnership with Les Rencontres d'Arles, committing to the festival for another five years as a major partner.
THE WOMEN IN MOTION AWARD FOR PHOTOGRAPHY 2023 IS PRESENTED TO ROSÂNGELA RENNÓ
On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, during the first evening at the Théâtre Antique in Arles, Kering and Les Rencontres d'Arles will present the fifth Women In Motion Award to Brazilian photographer Rosângela Rennó, who will also showcase her work and career for some 2 000 people in attendance. The prize, which has honored the career of an outstanding photographer every year since its creation, has been awarded to Susan Meiselas in 2019, Sabine Weiss in 2020, Liz Johnson Artur in 2021, and Babette Mangolte in 2022.
A monographic exhibition at La Mécanique Générale in Arles, entitled On the ruins of photography, will be dedicated to Rosângela Rennó. Supported by Women In Motion, this new display will be curated by Maria Angélica Melendi.
This is the first major monograph organized in France about the Brazilian photographer, who had received in 2013 at Les Rencontres d'Arles the Historical Book Award for her work on the photographs stolen from the National Library of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro.
Interested in "the way the system tries to erase or manipulate links with the past", the photographer appropriates and transforms archival photographic material into an art installation or a book of photography. Her work is a detailed exploration of time, of forgetting, and the social and psychological changes that affect memory.
A new episode of the Women In Motion Podcast recorded with Rosângela Rennó will be available upon the opening of the Rencontres, on July 3rd. Kering has launched in 2019 this series of podcasts to give voice to the most compelling women in culture and the arts. All episodes are available in French or English on Apple podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify or Deezer.
In addition, a new special issue of the Women In Motion publication collection, with commentaries by luminaries from the world of culture, will be dedicated to Rosângela Rennó and her exhibition in Arles. This issue will join the collector's boxed set edition published by Kering and Fisheye for the five-year anniversary of the program in Arles, bringing together the four copies previously dedicated to the prize-winners, highlighting all five artists honored by the Award since its creation.
SUPPORT FOR THE AGNÈS VARDA EXHIBITION: LA POINTE COURTE, FROM PHOTOGRAPHS TO FILM
Women In Motion is particularly proud to support La Pointe courte, from photographs to film, an exhibition curated by Carole Sandrin, assisted by Elisa Magnani of the Institut pour la Photographie.
The display, created with the approval of Rosalie Varda and the Ciné-Tamaris team, consists of photographs taken by Agnès Varda in the summer of 1954 before and during the shooting of the film La Pointe courte and will be on show at the Cloître Saint-Trophime during the Rencontres d'Arles.
Agnès Varda represents everything that the Women In Motion program was created for. A key figure in the program since the first edition in Cannes in 2015, she spoke on several occasions with her characteristic mixture of passion and imagination about the various battles she had fought, about feminism, and also the solutions that she envisaged – and to which she always remained committed. For Women In Motion, the exhibition is a way of maintaining its support for this hugely important figure in France’s artistic heritage.
SUPPORT FOR THE PRIX DE LA PHOTO MADAME FIGARO - ARLES
Kering is delighted to renew its support for the Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro - Arles, of which it has been a partner since its creation in 2016 through Women In Motion.
The Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro - Arles 2023 will be awarded on Friday, July 7, the final evening of the Rencontres at the Théâtre Antique in Arles, to an emerging female talent whose creative audacity has won over an exceptional jury chaired by artist Lou Doillon. Following in the tradition of her predecessors, the winner will produce a photographic series for Madame Figaro.
In previous editions of this competition, Laia Abril, Paz Errázuriz, Wiktoria Wojciechowska, Evangelía Kranióti, Eythar Gubara and Amina Kadous received the award for their vibrant and committed artistic approach.
