Kering Publishes 2nd Edition of Biodiversity Strategy Reinforcing its Deforestation and Conversion-Free Policy

Originally published in 2020, Kering launched the second edition of its biodiversity strategy today and revisited the Group’s pathway to have a net positive impact on biodiversity by 2025, by regenerating and protecting an area of around six times its total land footprint. In a newly dedicated chapter, Kering outlines its deforestation and conversion-free sourcing policy and reinforces its commitment to meet this goal across its operations and supply chain by 2025. The policy covers all natural ecosystems and goes beyond deforestation alone.

In a newly dedicated chapter, Kering outlines its deforestation and conversion-free sourcing policy and reinforces its commitment to meet this goal across its operations and supply chain by 2025. The policy covers all natural ecosystems and goes beyond deforestation alone.

To amplify this important topic and to support collective action, Kering has also signed Textile Exchange’s and the Leather Working Group’s “Deforestation-Free Call to Action for Leather” today. As a cross-sector initiative, it asks brands and retailers to commit to sourcing their bovine leather from deforestation-free supply chains by 2030 or earlier.

While Kering’s commitment is ahead of this timeline and covers conversion going beyond deforestation, the Group’s philosophy is to share best practices and support others who are at varying stages in their own sustainability journeys. Especially given that leather supply chains are complex and often opaque there needs to be widespread cooperation, consensus and targeted action to end the deforestation and conversion of natural ecosystems linked to leather sourcing. In doing so, this will help protect wildlife habitat and biodiversity, preserve carbon stocks, and protect human rights in the industry’s leather supply chains for the future.
